I find one of the scariest areas of design for the average home owner has to do with color. I see so many homes that have white walls. There was a commercial on TV where there was a couple staring at white walls, and the man says, “Aah white. It says classic, it says clean…”, and then the wife interrupts with “it says we can’t pick the right color!” That really says it all for me. If your lucky enough to be an interior designer, or have a natural talent, then picking color may not be that difficult. Unfortunately that is not the case for the majority of the population.

Here are a few things to remember when choosing wall colors:

-Paint is relatively cheap. If you don’t like it, you can change it!

-The darker the color the smaller your space will feel. The lighter, the bigger your space will seem.

-You do not have to stick with one color on all walls. Accent walls are BACK baby!

-Stuck? Choose a color from you fabrics whether its your upholstery or window treatments or your throw pillows! Preferably one that is not a dominant color in the pattern. This can tie several elements together.

-Colors look different in different light. Most home improvement stores have lighting that simulates the big 3 of light: NATURAL (sun), ARTIFICIAL (yellow) and HALOGEN (white)

The most important thing to remember is that

When all else fails, you cannot go wrong with neutrals.

Color is such a big part of our lives. It can soothe, inspire, energize and bring joy. You would be suprised at what the effect can do for you and those you love. In a time like this when stress is a part of all of our lives,  anything we can do to improve our moods and not kill our budget should be embraced and shared with others!

As everyone who uses CADD knows, there are about 3 different ways to do everything. Here is the 2 ways I repeat my previous commands.

Right-click and a diolgue box will pop up. Select “recent input” and a list of about your last 10 commands will drop down. Just select the one you want. If you use this for the offset command, you can right-click again and select “recent input” and a list of recent distances will pop up! Wow! That was a time saver! PHEW!

Tired of Drawing your flooring? Hatch it! Use the rectangle command to draw a square or rectangle (the rectangle command also allows you to adjust the corners to make any 3 or 4 sided shape). Then use the hatch command and select “add select objects” and then select your shape hit enter twice and voila! Now, just delete the shape you drew first. The floor is now hatched!

ADVANCED TIP :

If you are hatching your floor around another shape like a circle or another rectangle, use the  hatch command and then “add select objects” and click the outer shape. Then hit enter. Now BEFORE you close the hatch window, select “add select objects” one more time. Now select the inner shape and hit enter twice. HOORAY! The outer shape is hatched, but the inner shape is empty! PLEASE NOTE: If you attempt to do this with furniture. Make sure ANY shape is a complete shape and there are no gaps or this will not work!

I want to be concious of the choices I make and how they effect those around me. To always be “awake” to new thoughts and ideas and to evolve.
